PRESIDENT Trump’s week in review: PRESIDENT Trump may legalize “dreamers” because he has no political ideology except the pursuit of praise, and if he gets something on the Wall he can claim he made a good deal.  (The WEEK, September 22, 2017.) JUSTICE Department acknowledges it has no evidence to support President Trump’s claim President Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower.  (The WEEK), September 15, 2017.) PRESIDENT Trump has killed or delayed 860 rules in a wide range of areas, with the EPA leading the way.  (The WEEK, September 15, 2017.) DEMOCRATS claim agreement reached with President Trump on DACA and enhancements to border Wall (or “fence”, if you choose).  Trump denies full agreement, acknowledges there were discussions.  (Los Angeles Times, September 14, 2017.) PRESIDENT Trump visited hurricane devastated areas 3 times. FORMER Presidential aide Steve Bannon returns to Breitbart and tells interviewer Charlie Rose Bannon is “going to war” against those Republicans who are not supporting President Trump’s program.  (Los Angeles Times, September 11, 2017.) In other matters: RUSSIAN lawmaker brags on Russian TV that “U.S. intelligence missed it when Russian intelligence stole the Presidency of the United States”.  (The WEEK, September 22, 2017.) KIM Jong-Un continues to fire more powerful rockets with little effective...

PRESIDENT TRUMP REACHES DEAL WITH DEMS; HURRICANE IRMA THREATENS FLORIDA; DREAMERS DO A LOT MORE THAN DREAM; NORTH KOREA ACTIVE AGAIN; STATES APPEAL TO FEDS TO SAVE ACA; OROVILLE WATER MESS PREVENTABLE;  MORE.. ELDERUPDATES.COM, NO. 189 SEPTEMBER 9, 2017 PRESIDENT Trump’s week in review: As this edition goes to press, so to speak, Hurricane Irma is less than 24 hours from Florida.  At this point one can only hope for the best. PRESIDENT Trump reaches deal with Democrats on 3 month extension of government spending, raising the debt ceiling and providing ($15 B), in aid to Harvey victims is reached.  (Los Angeles Times, September 7, 2017.) Republicans were blindsided at this Trump-Democrat alliance.  After the non-stop attacks on McConnell, this agreement shows the possibility Trump will use his flexibility to make agreements instead of total governmental gridlock. Republicans wanted an 18 month agreement but Trump, apparently anxious for some major agreement, accepted the Democrats’ proposal, allegedly as proposed. NORTH Korea again tests weapons materials as it falls of the media limelight.  Causation or correlation?  Unknown. DREAMERS include people working in society at a greater rate than society as a whole (87% of dreamers who have permits work).  While immigration laws are enforced on the farms, fields crops go unpicked or even unplanted as it turns out Americans really won’t take some of the jobs these Mexicans will do. These 800,000 dreamers have roots in the communities and think of themselves as Americans.  Many have joined the military.  Arguments that immigrants don’t pay taxes are wrong and many of their cultures encourage very strong family ties.  Loyal Americans in all...

PRESIDENT Trump must also decide what to do about DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, rule enacted by President Obama.  There is intense pressure on both sides of the issue and again, perhaps the decision will be determined by the last one to have Trump’s ear. Childhood arrivals are the true undocumented immigrants, they came because that is what their parents said to do.  Many have known only the U.S. as their homeland. Technology companies urge Trump to keep DACA.  (Los Angeles Times, September 2, 2017.) HURRICANE Harvey blew into Houston, dropping 52” of rain, a U.S. record.  On his first visit to the city, Trump spoke only of the federal government actions and how the city would be better than ever after the repairs.  Obliviously, Malania wore 4” spike heels as if she were attending a gala event....

Trump acknowledges things look different from Oval Office.  A perspective he would do well to remember when next asked to subsidize coal mining, the reduction of national parkland, taxes, health and social services for addiction treatment, and the literally 1,000s of issues affected by a president.  Now that he has admitted it once, the next time may be easier for our blunderbuss President. Breitbart, to which Steve Bannon has returned, criticized the change in policy. PRESIDENT Trump challenges Congress to tie raising deficit ceiling to funds for wall at Mexican border.  Remember  “who’s going to pay for the wall?  MEXICO!)  Republican leaders...

He did both and thus disappointed everyone when he first saw violence on “many” sides, then became somewhat more realistic, then retreated to his initial positions that the Nazis and “alt-left” were equally at fault. COLORADO Senator Cory Gardner said we “should call evil by its name. This were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism”. (The Economist, August 19, 2017.) [Your blogger posted on Facebook comparing the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto and their Nazi overseers in WWII to the current White Supremacists with their open carry of weapons, KKK uniforms, Nazi flags vs. the “alt-left” (which your blogger admires for their courage to stand up physically to the Nazi free speech, at the risk of both arrest and beatings, even permanent injury or death. There is the law, and there is the time to stand up yourself and force progress in the law.) Free speech applies to speech in many forms, but did the founders so often cited by conservative jurists mean I can chant ‘Jews Won’t Replace Us” while threatening Jews and others with bats and guns? Korea nuclear weapon testing.  (Los Angeles Times, August 9, 2017.)  Promises of great violence and death not expected to reach President’s vacation home, however, giving relief to those overly concerned about man-boys sounding off. One who has never served should consult with those who have before adlibbing words that could lead to the death of tens of thousands, or more. One bluff leading to another leads to one or another misunderstanding in a firestorm of tension, and then leads to the order to … to do what, exactly? Presidents weighing these decisions in the past have been thoughtful about the potential dangers, albeit more so to our own citizens and allies.  One should not cross their arms like an angry dad saying “I’m done and you’re not going, and that’s it”! The stakes are high, the world is holding its collective breath and Trump ups the ante.  Trump doesn’t, but should, read history.  As McCain quoted Teddy Roosevelt “walk softly and carry a big stick”. Though President Trump may think he’s speaking to Kim Jong Un(predictable), in his own language, Trump he may just be adding tinder to the fire. Before starting off for...

CHIEF of Staff Rience Priebus fired by Scaramucci even before Scaramucci technically on payroll; Scaramucci had started his own job just 10 days ago. SCARAMUCCI then fired the day Trump appoints John Kelly to Chief of Staff position and after Scaramucci called a magazine to use dirty language to create demeaning visual pictures of Priebus and Bannon. Although Trump continues to rail at Sessions for recusing himself (Sessions) from Russian investigations, conservatives rally to Sessions’ defense stating there will be no hearings on a successor to Sessions, while Georgia (where Sessions was a senator contemplates whether he can simply return to his senate position. New Chief of Staff General Kelly apparently called Sessions to assure Sessions his job is safe.  Widespread hopes Kelly will bring structure and stability to White House. One wonders: was he like this with his mother?  “I will or won’t get you a mother’s day card; who knows?” Or is he like that because of his mother?  Where is Freud when you need him? RISING from the almost dead, a crescent of stitches over his left eye, Senator McCain returned to the Senate to vote “NO” and prevent the “repeal from going further” at approximately 1:37 a.m. Washington Time. Possibly, the Senator learned a thing or 2 about the importance of health care during his brain surgery. (Some claim a special “sympathy” chip was put in but your blogger has seen no evidence to support this claim, almost as outrageous as 3 M ineligible voters voting in last election.) Whatever the reason, this blog salutes him.  The...

OBAMACARE SURVIVES NON-REPEAL AS McCAIN SURVIVES BRAIN SURGERY; TRUMP SPOKESPERSON SPICE RESIGNS; NON-OPIOID RESEARCH; IRA DISTRIBUTIONS; 8 IN RUSSIAN DIRT DISTRIBUTION MEETING; ELECTRIC BUSSES COMING TO L.A., MORE ELDERUPDATES.COM, NO. 182 JULY 22, 2017 PRESIDENT Trump’s week in review: PRESIDENT Trump’s back and forth on what to do about health care for maybe 100 M Americans (70M on Medicaid alone, Children’s Health Care, and Obamacare), deserves more thought than a tweet.  Without the required 50 votes to get a bill to the Senate Floor Republicans may be ready to throw in the towel.  But don’t forget what happened in the House, the bill was resuscitated and passed. Recently Senator McConnell has been offering carrots to Alaska (premium support) and Ohio (opioid addiction treatment).  (The Economist, July 15, 2017.) Words such as “hearings” and “discuss” are being thrown about, and not just by Democrats.  (Los Angeles Times, July 19, 2017.)  Sadly and ironically, while Senator McCain recovers from his brain surgery others still wonder what they would do under similar circumstances.  Time to discuss health care as a serious national issue. GOP bills will make insurance unaffordable for many, especially those with preexisting conditions.  Senator Cruz proposes allowing carriers to have health plans that are not compliant with Obamacare standards if the carrier sells at least one plan which meets any Obamacare plan standard.  (Los Angeles Times, July 16, 2017.) “MEDICARE for all” is rallying cry for growing numbers of Americans.  Other countries administer health care through government with more stable systems as workers don’t lose health care when they change or lose jobs, and premiums don’t have to include...

PRESIDENT Trump goes to Paris at invitation of new French leader Macron to celebrate Bastille day and says “well, maybe we can do something on the Paris accord, but maybe not” as he backs down from hardline position.  (KPPC radio, July 13, 2017.) After Trump withdrew from the Paris accords 900 companies signed a “we are still in” letter addressed to the U.N.  (The Economist, June 10, 2017.) DONALD Trump, Jr., releases email chain between himself and others acknowledging he met with alleged Russian government lawyer for dirt on Clinton, got none, but now reaps the whirlwind for meeting with hostile country over U.S. election politics.  (Los Angeles Times, July 12, 2017.) IN Trump-Putin discussion 40 minutes was spent on Russian election interference before the parties agreed to disagree.  Foolishly, Trump did not bring any intelligence experts to the meeting.  Just as foolishly, he has derided 17 agencies and disregarded their findings that Russia interfered. PRESIDENT Trump has been busy signing rule changes to ax government regulations, primarily involving labor laws and coal mining rules.  (The Kiplinger Letter, July 7, 2017.)
